Sturgeon County’s 2013 Volunteer of the Year is ready to step up to the council table.

Susan Evans issued a press release early Tuesday morning stating she will run for county council in Division 2.

Evans did not return a call to the Gazette before its press deadline. Tom Flynn, the current Division 2 councillor, is running for mayor in October.

Evans has been active in the county for years, currently volunteering with the Cardiff Community Association and Rotary Club of Morinville and Area. She is also a board member of the Progressive Conservative Riding Association for Spruce Grove-St. Albert. She co-chairs NorQuest College’s Community Adult Education Council and the St. Albert/Sturgeon County Early Childhood Coalition.

Besides being named the county’s 2013 Volunteer of the Year, she was recognized in 2012 by the Alberta School Councils with its Parent of Distinction Award.

“Evans is of the opinion that service to community requires the ability to advocate, collaborate and work effectively both as a team player and a leader,” her release states.

Evans said her priorities include building “strong, vibrant and sustainable communities,” exercising “responsible stewardship of the taxpayers’ dollar” and building relationships with residents and neighbours.

“I would like to contribute to the growth and prosperity of Sturgeon County and advocate on behalf of the residents of Division 2,” Evans stated in her release.
