LEVELLED – An explosion and fire destroyed a mobile home near Sandy Beach around 7:30 a.m. Thursday. The suspected cause is a propane tank leak.

A pile of rubble is all that is left after a mobile home exploded and went up in flames early Thursday morning.

Morinville RCMP and the Sturgeon fire department were dispatched to the blaze around 7:30 a.m. to the neighbourhood of Pine Sands Estates in Sandy Beach, west of Morinville.

The explosion and subsequent fire broke windows and left pieces of the house lodged into the sides of neighbouring homes.

No injuries have been reported.

“I’m glad I wasn’t in it,” said homeowner Randy Johnston at the scene on Thursday.

Johnston said he bought the home a couple of years ago for his father to live in and has been fixing it up ever since.

“It is what it is,” he said, adding that he plans to rebuild.

At least 15 firefighters were on scene. The investigation was complete by 1 p.m.

A propane-heated furnace appears to have caused the explosion.
