Pills that have been sold as OxyContin in St. Albert, are fake and may be lethal, warn RCMP.

The RCMP drug lab confirmed the OxyContin pills seized by local officers are actually Fentanyl, an opioid pain medication more potent than morphine.

RCMP believe the fake OxyContin pills have been seen in Edmonton and surrounding communities.

The pills have the number 80 on them and are a round, convex shape, blue-green in colour. Similar pills have been linked to two deaths in Saskatoon, Sask. earlier this month.

"The community should be concerned. RCMP Drug investigators tell me that Fentanyl is 80 times more toxic than morphine," said Insp. Kevin Murray, detachment commander of St. Albert RCMP.

Health Canada states that signs of a fentanyl overdose may include: slow or weak breathing, dizziness, tiredness, extreme sleepiness, confusion, difficulty talking or walking, hallucinations and seizures.
