Firefighters in service, ready to take your orders

At Your Service Library’s used book sale on deck

Step one is done for the St. Albert Firefighters and now it’s time to put the boots back on their feet. After a successful Boot Drive on the weekend, the team is gearing up to be servers tomorrow evening between 5 and 9 p.m. at East Side Mario’s.

If you already thought that firefighters were talented, wait till you see how well they take orders: your dinner orders, that is.

“I believe that firefighters are a special breed and their passion is helping others, be it in an emergency situation or non-emergency situation. It's kind of who they are,” said Kathi Sheedy, one of the spokespeople for the Rooftop Campout campaign.

“You know the saying goes that firefighters are the bravest because they do truly run into burning buildings to save people. But I also like to say that they’re the kindest as well because when there’s not an emergency happening, there’s still that person you can go to.”

Please tip them generously. Their tips from the evening will go to the campaign in support of Muscular Dystrophy Canada. They will also have a gift basket being raffled off with tickets being sold for $5 each. They also have special Muscular Dystrophy/St. Albert Fire Services T-shirts available for $20. The restaurant is located at 615 St. Albert Trail.

Not to be outdone, they also have an online auction underway on their new website at www.firefightersformd.com. There are more than 85 items up for bids until the auction ends on Friday, March 15, at 4 p.m. The proper Rooftop Campout starts up Fire Station #2 on Monday next week.

This year’s campaign goal is $45,000 with all money raised going towards improving the quality of life for local individuals with neuromuscular disorders. Donations will help support the purchase of mobility equipment, provide support services and fund research, which will one day lead to a cure. Last year, St. Albert raised $45,448 during the campaign.

Buy a bag of books … from the library

The St. Albert Public Library always has a handful of fundraisers on the go including the Reel Mondays film series (next up … The Wife on April 1). Before that happens, patrons can stop by the Spring Book Sale and stock up on some great book bargains, not to mention DVDs and music CDs.

The sale runs in the lobby of St. Albert Place during the library’s regular business hours from Thursday, March 7, to Monday, March 11. The closing day sale is an extravaganza with shoppers allowed to fill a bag of books for $20. Visit www.sapl.ca for more details.
