The shelves are filling up nicely at the St. Albert Food Bank, thanks to the annual food drive held last Saturday.
While the end tally is still being calculated with each new intake, executive director Suzan Krecsy thanked the city’s residents for their contributions, both in the form of donations and in volunteer time.
“We don’t have final numbers because we still have people collecting for us,” she said during a brief phone interview on Friday, which was exceptionally busy with clients.
“Right now, we’re about four to five thousand pounds over where we were last year,” she said.
Krecsy was hesitant to say how well the drive had gone towards achieving its goal of 23,000 kilograms of food.
“It’s coming. We’re always hopeful. We have a ways to go yet,” she said.
Last year’s drive brought in 19,000 kilograms.
This was the first year that the agency had to conduct the drive with its new access entrance because of the construction of the Lions Village housing development. Things went smoothly, Krecsy said, thanks to all the generous helpers on site.
“It was a really good day. Lots of volunteers. The weather was perfect. It was absolutely wonderful,” she said.
The food bank helped feed 3,068 adults and 2,976 children in 2011.
