St. Albert’s Little White School is set to receive upgrades courtesy of the federal government.

Edmonton-St. Albert MP Brent Rathgeber will announce the upgrades at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at the school, located at 2 Madonna Dr.

Donna Kinley, spokesperson for Western Economic Diversification Canada, said she represents just one of the funders contributing to this project. She could not comment on the contribution amount or what funds will be used for.

The funding is part of the government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund, which supports repairs and upgrades to infrastructure on a cost-shared basis.

“It’s a two-year national program that will invest $150 million across Canada as part of the Government of Canada’s commitment to modernizing Canada’s public infrastructure,” Kinley said.

Rathgeber is set to make the announcement on behalf of Lynne Yelich, minister of state for Western Economic Diversification.

The two-room schoolhouse has been undergoing restoration for more than two years with a final price tag set at more than $637,000.

The first phase, aimed at restoring the building’s exterior, wrapped up in July. The second phase is focused on creating barrier-free access and, according to the MusĂ©e HĂ©ritage Museum’s website, is still in progress.

Ann Ramsden, director of heritage, was unavailable to comment on what renovations are still needed for the site.

The Little White School opened in 1948 and is managed by the Musée Héritage Museum, which in turn is managed by Arts and Heritage St. Albert.
