Gazette earns best overall newspaper award

The St. Albert Gazette earned several top industry awards June 8 at the Alberta Weekly Newspaper Association banquet and awards ceremony.

The St. Albert Gazette earned several top industry awards June 8 at the Alberta Weekly Newspaper Association banquet and awards ceremony.

The Gazette was named best overall newspaper in its circulation class and also earned a first place award for best editorial page, topping the Okotoks Western Wheel in both categories.

The Gazette’s talented ad design department earned an award for best ad campaign.

As well, with a nod to Gazette sports editor Jeff Hansen, the Gazette earned third place in the best sports page category.

Gazette reporters also earned several individual awards. Kevin Ma took home the Cenovus Healthy Communities Journalism Award for his feature story on obsessive-compulsive disorder, while veteran writer Susan Jones earned the University of Alberta Writing Award for a story entitled What is clean? – about household and personal cleanliness.

The Gazette’s popular and multi-faceted community reporter Scott Hayes earned a second place recognition in the arts and culture category for his behind-the-scenes look at Alberta’s movie rating team, entitled Parental discretion is advised.

Ma also earned a third place nod in the best habitat conservation category for his story entitled The State of the Sturgeon.
