A weeklong fundraising event aims to boost people’s fitness levels and create good karma by giving back.

Sturgeon Valley Athletic Club will offer 10 demo classes this week, running from Monday, Jan. 20 to Sunday, Jan. 26. The classes are free to join for anyone who donates a clean, gently-worn piece of winter clothing to be given to Edmonton’s Bissell Centre, said club manager Christine Rawlins.

“We just thought that it was appropriate (to fundraise) with the way that our winter has been one of extremes,” she said.

The Bissell Centre is a community resource centre that has been in Edmonton’s inner city since 1910. The centre cares for individuals and families living in poverty, supporting them with work placement, housing, mental health and addiction problems.

Rawlins said the club supports the St. Albert Food Bank throughout the Christmas season but wanted to switch up their fundraising efforts in January.

Classes will take place at different times throughout the week. People can sign up online for as many classes as they want to attend, she added, though they must provide a new piece of clothing for each one. Regular drop-in classes cost about $13.50 per class, she said.

“We have everything from zumba to kettlebelts, a boot camp, yoga,” she said. “We have a ballet-bar class as well which is quite popular this year in the industry.”
