Sturgeon County golfers could one day zip around on go-carts in between holes if County council rezones a chunk of land across from the Meadowview Golf Course.
Sturgeon County council passed first reading of a bylaw March 8 to rezone about 28 acres of land north of the Meadowview Golf & Country Club on Meadowview Drive to recreational from agriculture.
County current planning program lead Martyn Bell told council that a developer sought this change to build a driving range which would complement their other development (the Meadowview Golf Course), which is across the street from these lands. A concept plan from the developer showed that the site could eventually host go-carts, mini-golf, batting cages, and a camping area for up to 60 recreational vehicles.
Coun. Neal Comeau said he worried about the traffic implications of this development and how it could result in trailers and motorhomes turning out of the proposed campground onto what is already a busy road.
“If I’m coming from the golf course and I want to hit a bucket of balls, do I just drive my golf cart across the road to get to the driving range?”
Bell said administration has asked the developer to do a traffic impact assessment prior to third reading, one which would have to account for this land’s full build-out. The developer would have to pay for any infrastructure upgrades necessary to support this development.
The bylaw is set to go before a public hearing later this year.
