Celebrities like Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Lawrence and BeyoncĂ© may be rocking new short hairstyles on red carpets, but local women aren’t following the trend for trends sake.

Lindsey Swinton, owner of Raw Beauty, says the days of customers coming in asking for the Jennifer Aniston, or another celeb style, are gone.

“People don’t do that anymore,” Swinton says. “People do what suits them and what suits their lifestyle, so that’s really what the trends are – what works for them.”

When it comes to cut and colour, many women are choosing more natural styles. Swinton says natural textures are in right now.

“Just natural waves,” she says. “It’s not as straight as it has been for the past couple years where hair was so poker straight. It’s really going away from that to nice loose waves, a lot of undone hairstyles. (Updos) are very loose and wavy and just lightly pinned loose buns.”

Swinton says the mid-length bob is in right now, especially for those who don’t want to go too short or very long with their locks. Cuts are also less wispy and not as texturized than they have been with more solid, grown-out looks.

Where bold streaks and highlights have been popular in recent years, colour is heading in a more natural direction as well. Swinton says solid colours are rising in popularity and highlights are more natural looking.

“People don’t want to look like they have streaks in their hair,” says Swinton. “It’s really blended, it really grows out nicely. And when we do streaks, it’s like a really random, piecey look that doesn’t look done by the book.”

Swinton says another colour technique that she and the stylists at Raw Beauty have noticed many women opting for right now is ombre where the ends of the hair fade into a different colour.

“The ends fade into like a light purple or a light violet, peaches, pinks, light blues, caramels, coppers,” Swinton says.

Women can keep it natural fading into lighter tones of their natural hair colour, or have a little more fun with the look.

“We have one girl here, she does a lot of really funky colours on people,” says Swinton. “She does like the bright blues and yellows and oranges and greens.”

Clients opting for fun, funky colours do need to be prepared for some maintenance. Swinton says the colours will fade out in eight to 12 washes and, “It doesn’t always fade pretty.”
