High flyer clocked at almost 265 km/h

A St. Albert man has been handed a speeding ticket after a motorcyclist was stopped on the Anthony Henday going nearly 265 kilometres an hour.

According to the Edmonton Police, the motorcyclist went past an unmarked police cruiser at 264 km/h on the freeway near the interchange with Campbell Road.

No one was hurt, but police spokesperson Scott Pattison said the speed was tremendously unsafe.

“I think the number speaks for itself, it is ridiculous, in a word.”

At that speed, Pattison said a motorcycle would need more than 400 metres to come to a stop. That would also not include the time needed for the motorcyclist to react and actually start applying the brakes.

“This fellow would travel more than 100 metres before even starting to stop.”

The police understand that people who own recreational vehicles like that may have a need for speed, but highways are not appropriate places.

“There are places for doing that, the Castrol race track is a good example.”

Paul Bennett, 32, of St. Albert, has been charged with one count of speeding. Pattison said it is possible other charges might be brought forward at a later date.

According to Edmonton police statistics, five motorcyclists were killed in 2011 and another four were seriously injured.
