RCMP officers are on the scene in Sturgeon County after a surveyor found human remains in a field on Wednesday.

Police were called Wednesday around 10 a.m. and quickly confirmed the remains were human before calling in the Edmonton major crimes unit, dog teams, forensic investigators and the Project KARE team.

Project KARE is a specialized RCMP unit that investigates the deaths of people in high-risk lifestyles, mostly female sex workers.

The police were set to end their search on Friday evening after the Gazette went to press and declined to reveal the exact location until that search was over.

“We are keeping the location to ourselves at the moment, because we are doing a search in the area and we need to remain focused and we need people to stay away from that area,” said RCMP spokesperson Doris Stapleton.

The RCMP haven’t yet been able to identify the age or gender of the remains and don’t know how long they’ve been there.

“We don’t know at this point what we have, but hopefully our search will give us more information,” Stapleton said. “We are looking for evidence, clothing, personal effects, that kind of thing.”

At this point the police know very little but more information will be released as they learn more.

“We are so early in the investigation, lots of unanswered questions,” she said.
