Human remains found last week near Morinville are now in the custody of the provincial medical examiner, but little else is known about the grim discovery.

RCMP officers concluded a search late on Friday around Carbondale Road and Range Road 245, just west of Carbondale, after a surveyor found human remains in a field on May 16.

The Morinville RCMP were called at 10 a.m. and quickly confirmed the remains were human before calling in the Edmonton major crimes unit, dog teams, forensic investigators and the Project KARE team.

Project KARE is a specialized RCMP unit that investigates the deaths of people in high-risk lifestyles, mostly female sex workers.

At this point very little is known about the remains, including the age, gender or even how long they had been in the field, RCMP spokesperson Doris Stapleton said on Tuesday. She said investigators are still looking into the case, but would also await the medical examiner’s findings.

Last week Stapleton said the search police conducted of the area was meant to discover any other evidence that might give police a better understanding of what took place.

“We don’t know at this point what we have, but hopefully our search will give us more information,” Stapleton said. “We are looking for evidence, clothing, personal effects, that kind of thing.”

She said police would release more information as the investigation continues.

“We are so early in the investigation, lots of unanswered questions.”
