Man charged with child luring back in court

An Edmonton man charged with child luring, sexual assault, and pornography will be back in court in three weeks after his lawyer requested time for disclosure.

On Sept. 1 Judge John Higgerty accepted a disclosure request for Imesh Ratnayake, 21, who will be back in Morinville Provincial Court on Sept. 22.

Ratnayake has been charged with sexual assault; sexual interference; luring a child; making child pornography; transmitting child pornography; possessing child pornography; obtaining sexual service for consideration from persons under 18; invitation to sexual touching; distributing of intimate images; and extortion.

In a statement released on July 27, Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) said an Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit investigation allegedly found Ratnayake used the Snapchat name “islandsauce0129” or “monked.ruffy” to make initial contact with “youth he met online.”

Man still in custody after break-in thwarted by RCMP

A man who attempted to break into Pro North Industrial Park in Sturgeon County was sentenced in Morinville Provincial Court on Thursday.

On Sept. 1, Judge John Higgerty sentenced Daniel Mcdonald, 32, who appeared by CCTV from the Drumheller Institution, to 165 days incarceration consecutive to any other sentence that he's currently serving, for one count of failure to attend; one count of break and enter in a non-residence in Morinville; three separate counts of failure to comply with release orders from Sherwood Park; and two separate counts of failure to comply with release order conditions from Spruce Grove.

The sentence was by way of a joint submission by Crown prosecutor Dallas Sopko and defence counsel Kathryn Quinlan.

According to the agreed statement of facts, Morinville RCMP were dispatched to an active break and enter on May 27, 2021.

Two male suspects were observed via surveillance trying to break into containers. Police apprehended one of the men after he was observed leaving the area through a freshly-cut hole in a fence.

RCMP and a police dog followed a track leading into a neighbouring business and located Mcdonald, court heard. He was arrested.

Mcdonald was found by RCMP to have failed to comply with release orders in Sherwood Park on Sept. 22, 2021. On July 7, 2022, Mcdonald was found to be breaking curfew orders in Spruce Grove.

A criminal record was alleged and considered to be an aggravating factor. The court heard Mcdonald had a total of 17 property convictions on his record.

Sopko said a mitigating factor was the global exposition that saved the court a significant amount of resources.
