A W.D. Cuts teacher has been disciplined after parents complained about a sexually suggestive video shown to a Grade 7 class.

Media reports suggest that a parent complained to the principal of W.D. Cuts Junior High school earlier this week after his daughter told him about a YouTube video shown to her Grade 7 language arts class.

The video, entitled “Blue Ribbon Panel Corporate Training for the 21st Century,” is a satirical piece produced by American writer Tyler Spiers. The piece resembles a 1980s instructional video on workplace sexual harassment, and features several over-the-top examples in the form of lewd dialogue and a moving sex toy left on a conference room table during a presentation. YouTube requires visitors to verify that they are 18 years or older before viewing the video.

The Gazette was unable to reach the parent who made the complaint. School principal Mike Tod did not respond to a request for interview by press time.

Barry Wowk, superintendent for the St. Albert Protestant School District, refused to release the name of the parent, student, class or teacher involved in the incident, but did say he believed it happened around Wednesday.

“We had a concern expressed that a teacher had used an inappropriate resource,” he said, “and as always we take those situations very seriously.” Investigation by school staff determined that the alleged video was shown and that it was not appropriate to the age group of the class.

The teacher would be disciplined, said Wowk, who would not discuss the nature of that discipline. The school would also take steps to ensure the incident did not happen again, the details of which he would not disclose. “We believe this won’t happen again.”
