Local firm Nason Contracting Group was recently bought by Toronto-based Bird Construction Inc.

The large national general contractor acquired the 25-year-old St. Albert-based company for approximately $12.8 million.

According to Gilles Royer, senior vice president for Bird Construction, both companies will profit from the sale.

“It gives us a more diverse service offering to have that electrical expertise and the water and wastewater field is an area of growth,” he said.

“This is about growth and diversification.”

Nason Contracting Group is a construction and servicing company for water and wastewater treatment facilities. The company works all across Western Canada, in the Northwest Territories and the Yukon.

Royer said the purchase of Nason complemented both companies’ expertise.

“We like to grow the revenues of Nason which have been in the order of $35 to $40 million a year,” he said.

“We like to take that and grow it by giving them access to a broader client base and the ability to do larger projects in the same line of work.”

He added that Nason will likely hire more staff in the future but it would remain in St. Albert.

The company further agreed that its current employees would stay on with Bird for a minimum of five years.

“When you buy a company like Nason, really what you are buying more than anything in construction are the abilities of people – the skill at the trade level, at the managerial level and in construction,” he said.

The acquisition of Nason is expected to be officially complete by Jan. 15.

Nason is located in Campbell Business Park. Attempts to contact representatives of the local firm went unanswered.
