Local hypnotherapist helps out humane society

A local social worker and certified clinical hypnotherapist wants to give people the gift they can give themselves over and over again and help some special animals at the same time.

A local social worker and certified clinical hypnotherapist wants to give people the gift they can give themselves over and over again and help some special animals at the same time.

“Everybody is making New Year’s resolutions,” laughed Terri Cooper.

She recently began offering her services to help people stop smoking but now she is teaching Introduction to Self-Hypnosis at $50 for each two-hour session. She says it’s an incredible value considering she normally charges $150 for each hour. Even more generous is that she is giving 100 per cent of the proceeds to the Edmonton Humane Society, a cause that’s near and dear to her heart.

“I’ve always supported the shelter. I’m an animal lover. This is just another way to make a donation to [the humane society] and it allows people to get a receipt. It’s an unusual way to donate my time because it’s a win-win all around.”

People can expect Cooper to demystify hypnosis and learn how to change their own thoughts and behaviours as a way of taking responsibility and control over their own lives.

“It’s not magic; it’s not what you see on TV or a stage show. It’s just about how we’re utilizing our brains. With a few tools, we can make changes for ourselves.”

She said the benefits could be applied to practically any area of a person’s life and not just whether they want to quit smoking or lose weight.

“Any habit that we want to shift, we can use self-hypnosis for.”

The first session ran two weeks ago but there are five more in the works once a month with the next one taking place on Jan. 4, 2011 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. All will be held in the education room at the Edmonton Humane Society at 13620-163 St.
