A man is facing three charges after a two-vehicle collision on Levasseur Road and Heritage Way on Halloween night.

St. Albert RCMP responded to a collision between a 1999 blue Ford Escort and a 2008 red Jeep Cherokee around 9:15 p.m. The Ford Escort was speeding westbound on Levasseur Road without any headlights on. The Jeep was heading southbound from Grandin into Heritage Lakes on Heritage Way.

Two adults and one child were travelling in the Jeep. A nine-year-old girl complained of minor injuries while her parents were shaken up, say RCMP.

The 24-year-old driver of the Ford Escort had beer, marijuana and a meth pipe in his possession at the time of the collision. He had also taken lithium and sleeping pills prior to driving, say RCMP.

The man’s name has not been released since the criminal charges are not yet sworn. He faces charges of possession of marijuana, careless driving and driving without insurance.

He also received a 24-hour suspension from driving.

He is scheduled to appear in St. Albert court on Dec. 23 for the possession charge.

During the month of October, nine drivers were charged with impaired driving and 11 were given 24-hour license suspensions.

All of the impaired driving cases involved alcohol, while the 24-hour suspension cases resulted from drivers using drugs including marijuana, methamphetamine and prescription drugs.

"Unfortunately, it seems that we need to remind people regularly that certain actions can have deadly consequences such as driving while impaired," says Insp. Kevin Murray, St. Albert RCMP detachment commander.

“Driving while impaired by either alcohol or other drugs, speeding, and driving while distracted all dramatically increases the likelihood of being in a collision. There is simply no excuse for these behaviours as they put the lives of other people at risk.”
