Memory and health help, coming courtesy of 50+

If you forgot where you left your glasses again then the St. Albert 50+ Club can help you find them again, and more.

Once again, the local gathering place for seniors young and old is hosting a series of courses designed to improve your memory. In fact, Val Niblock, executive director of the club, feels that it’s her organization’s duty to help seniors out in as many ways as possible.

“Because we are the provider of outreach services within the city of St. Albert, part of our role is to understand the needs of the 50-plus community when it comes to things like health, fitness, housing … ” she began.

“We become very cognizant of those needs as a person evolves from being 50 to 65 to 80. Therefore, we take it upon ourselves as one of our roles to make sure that we’re giving as much information out to that community as is possible.”

Boosting Your Memory runs from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on the six Thursdays from Aug. 29 to Oct. 3 inclusive. It will offer participants strategies to remember better, to sustain their memories, and to “keep their brains in top running condition” according to the club’s newsletter.

It will be run by an instructor from Alberta Health Services. There is no fee to attend.

Niblock added that this course has received much positive feedback in the past.

“We do surveys at the end of each one. They’re glad that they’re being held, especially Boosting Your Memory. I heard significantly from our members after the last one that it was really valuable to have.”

Another repeat course, Better Choices, Better Health, will offer people ways to manage symptoms of a variety of chronic health issues. It can even benefit the loved ones of those with the issues. There will be information presented about problem solving, coping strategies, developing better life habits, and communication skills.

This course also runs for six weeks, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays from Sept. 10 to Oct. 15. There is no fee to attend. You do not need a doctor referral to take part.

To register for either of these or any of the 50+ Club’s other programs, please call them at 780-459-0433 (ext. 0). You do not have to be a member to attend.
