The origin of a fire that destroyed St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Morinville last Sunday is being considered suspicious, say local RCMP.

RCMP believe the fire originated in the area of a storage shed at the back of the church.

“We couldn’t find anything else that would be an a explanation for how it started,” said Cpl. Jason Zazulak with Morinville RCMP, noting the fire could have been ignited by flammable materials surrounding the shed.

RCMP are continuing the investigation by analyzing video surveillance from local businesses and speaking with bystanders who were on scene.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact the Morinville RCMP at 780-939-4550. Anonymous information can be provided to Northern Alberta Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Zazulak said the RCMP is thankful to the numerous members of the public who have supplied information and photographs so far to assist in this investigation.
