Morinville’s Heritage Lake Industrial Park area became a bit more beautiful last week when Girl Guides partnered with the Lafarge Ready-mix Concrete Plant to plant a pollinator garden.

“It is great biodiversity for us with a pollinating garden,” event co-ordinator and Lafarge area manager David Chute said.

The Guides and their families worked together with Lafarge staff to create the garden. Many members of the Lafarge staff and their families were there to assist the girls with the project.

“My favourite part about it is raking,” guide Annabella Boisvert said. “I think I get a scout badge for this.”

The Lafarge site sits in an industrial area and the garden is a unique green addition to a grey area of town. It was the third annual event hosted by Lafarge to help support the local community.

This pollinator garden has more than 200 plants with 28 different species. They include bee tubes that will help encourage pollination in the entire area. It also features perennials and flowers that bloom throughout the summer and into the fall.

Michelle Sevenhuysen, environment co-ordinator for northern Alberta at Lafarge, chose plants native to the area and non-invasive species to create a sustainable habitat.

In addition to planting the garden, the guides helped spread grass seed around the Lafarge Plant area in Heritage Lake Industrial Park to help beautify the area.

The Girl Guides received their community service badges for their contributions to the community.

“It is good for the Girl Guides to help us in the community,” Chute said. “The Girl Guides come out every year. We love being a local supporter.”
