Morinville RCMP are on the hunt for two men who robbed a Bon Accord bank at gunpoint around lunchtime Friday, and they’re looking for the public’s help.

At about 12:05 p.m., police responded to a call at the Alberta Treasury Branch where two males had robbed the lone female teller at gunpoint.

Police say the men were wearing disguises to conceal their identities. In the bank one man pointed a black handgun at the teller and told her to lay on the floor face down. The second man then made his way behind the counter and was able to access the bank’s safe and take an undisclosed amount of money.

Cpl. Bryce Tarzwell said there were no injuries as a result of the incident, although the teller was understandably shaken up, and he does not believe there is any need for area residents to worry about their own safety.

“I don’t think there’s any real risk to the general public,” he said, adding local businesses should remain vigilant, implement safety protocols and ensure staff aren’t working alone.

He said police believe the two men then left the Bon Accord area north on Lily Lake Road (Range Road 235) in an older model green Dodge Caravan.

The first suspect is described as being between five-feet, 10-inches, 200 to 230 lbs., who was wearing blue track pants with a silver stripe, a black sweatshirt with a white logo on the left breast, a black balaclava, white and black gloves, and possibly a red undershirt or shorts. He had very dirty feet and long toe nails.

The second suspect is described as being between five-feet, 10-inches and six-feet, 180 to 200 lbs., wearing sneakers, blue jeans, a black hoodie, a scarf or bandana over his face, with sunglasses and dark gloves.

Tarzwell said in his three years with the detachment this is the first time he’s heard of an armed bank robbery, and armed robberies in general are fairly rare in the area.

“I know we’ve had a few armed robberies in the last couple months, which is out of the ordinary as well,” he said.
