Museum seeks young shutterbugs

The Musée Héritage Museum is once again encouraging local youths to pick up a camera with its annual digital photo contest.

Take Your Best Shot gives kids from grades 3 to 12 the chance to show off their young talent. What’s more, they can get their work displayed in an actual exhibit at the museum, and win prizes too.

Curator Joanne White always looks forward to the contest because of the surprising amount of talent lurking in St. Albert’s school systems.

“I like the amazing things that the kids come up with,” she said, commenting on the “phenomenal quality” of the work.

“Sometimes they just think outside of the box and you’re just amazed at where they’re coming from and their creativity.”

This is the third edition of Take Your Best Shot. This time the theme is “Playing Around St. Albert.” Entrants are meant to take a picture of anything related to any kind of play in or around the city. This could involve sports and games that are being played or watched. It could be about places for play, play partners, people or animals actively playing, or fitness and outdoor activities in general.

“It can be anything from a kitten playing with a ball of wool to a formal sporting event, and anything in between. That’s all up to their interpretation,” White continued.

“We want to give them a lot of scope to play with. That is partly because, in the last two years, we’ve seen what they can do with a general subject and where they can take it. They take it to places we haven’t even thought of.”

Entries will be divided into three groups: grades 3 to 6, grades 7 to 9, and grades 10 to 12.

A jury will choose 12 photos from each age group to be displayed at the museum and on its website. The jury will also choose the top three best photos from each category.

Winning photographs will be displayed at the Musée Héritage Museum from Tuesday, Nov. 26 to Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014.

A special reception and prize presentation will be held on Friday, Nov. 29. First prize for each category is a $200 gift card to McBain Camera. Second and third prizes are $150 and $100 gift cards, respectively.

The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, Oct. 15.
