St. Albertans and area residents will have another walk-in medical clinic at their disposal as the new McKenney Medicentre is set to open its doors Monday.
The clinic, located at #210, 10 McKenney Ave. just off St. Albert Trail, is accepting new patients and walk-ins.
The Medicentre will be staffed by two doctors during the day and one doctor during the evenings seven days per week.
The McKenney Medicentre will be the second walk-in medical clinic located in St. Albert. Previously the only walk-in clinic for the surrounding communities was the Tudor Glen Medicentre.
Former city councillor Malcolm Parker, an active member of the city’s physician attraction task force established in 2010, said the Medicentre is a welcome addition to the community.
“You hear all the time about people going to see their doctors and the wait times are quite long. When they do get in to see them and try to make an (another) appointment, you have to do it almost a month ahead of time,” he said.
“Clearly this coming into the community meets a need.”
Other developments
During his time on council Parker worked with the developers of the Sturgeon Medical Arts Centre, a multi-million dollar “one-stop shop” medical complex now under construction across from the Sturgeon Community Hospital.
He’s eager to see that development come to fruition.
While the new Medicentre will serve an immediate need, he remarked that the medical arts centre will be a space for more doctors and complementary services to set up practice.
“The whole issue is that when you need medical help it’s hard to get a doctor and it’s hard to get attention right away,” he said.
The Sturgeon Medical Arts Centre is projected to open its doors in summer 2014. Three spaces for medical offices are still available to be leased for October.
Another medical professional centre that is still looking for tenants is St. Albert Crossing.
The firm is still trying to secure funding for the office space, said Steven Butt of Avenue Commercial, the Calgary-based real estate firm that has taken over the project next to Socrates Restaurant on St. Albert Trail.
The project has attracted several leasing inquiries, but is in the same situation as it was in last year.
“We’re looking for tenants to solidify the project and move it forward,” Butt said. “We would love some tenants.”
