Those heading to Leduc this weekend can catch some great St. Albert athletes competing in that city Saturday.

The St. Albert Firsts will be playing on the road against CCIAC, the Calgary Irish, in an Alberta Cup match. The game starts at 10:30 a.m. and will be played at L.A. Crude (Leduc) RFC field located at 4205 48 Ave.

As of Thursday, May 23 the Firsts stand at 0-1 in Alberta Cup play, 22 points for, 29 points against.

International rugby

Local rugby fans will have a great chance to see elite, international level competition through the Pacific Nations Cup being played in Alberta. A St. Albert player is competing too. Andy Tiedemann is registered under the French team FC Auch Gers.

Team Canada is scheduled to play USA in the opening round Saturday, at Ellerslie Rugby Park in Edmonton. Game time is 2 p.m., but show up early because it’s going to be packed. Directions and parking instructions are available online at www.edmontonrugby.com.

Girls are scrumming it

High school girls rugby is heating up as playoffs for Paul Kane, Bellerose and St. Albert High are coming soon.

According to the Metro Edmonton Athletic Association website, Paul Kane High School will play Tuesday at 5 p.m. versus Bev Facey on Lynn Davies field.

Playing at the same time nearby at Lynn Davies will be Bellerose, who will face Beaumont. Both games are Premier Conference semi-finals and the two winners go on to the Premier Conference championship May 30 at Ellerslie Field.

On the City Conference side, St. Albert High is scheduled to play Leduc in play-off action Tuesday, 5 p.m. at Ellerslie Field according to the MEAA website.

Stick stuff

The St. Albert Jr. A Miners face the Calgary Jr. Mountaineers Saturday at 2:30 p.m. According to www.rockymountainlax.com May 23, the Miners are in last place in their division right now with an 0-3 record with 22 goals for, 42 goals against. They’ve logged 143 penalty minutes. The Mountaineers are in first place, with a 7-3 record.

Follow that up with the Jr. A Miners facing the Okotoks Jr. Raiders 5 p.m. Sunday. Okotoks is in second place in the standings with a 6-4 record.

The Sr. B Miners are also playing this weekend, Sunday, at 2:30 p.m. versus the Calgary Sr. Mounties. The Miners and Mounties are within a game of each other in division standings, second and third place respectively, so an important game for St. Albert.
