One more St. Albert COVID death while province hits record high confirmed case count

The province has hit a record 62,733 active COVID-19 cases.

St. Albert COVID cases continue to increase, and the province reported a record number of COVID cases on Thursday.

Provincial data current from Jan. 12 shows St. Albert has had an increase in active COVID cases by 66. There are 1,208 active cases of the virus, compared to the 1,142 reported from Jan. 9 data.

One more St. Albertan has died from COVID-19, putting the total number of COVID-19 deaths in the city at 55.

Sturgeon County has a reported 286 active cases of the virus — an increase of 95 since Sunday. Fifteen people from the county have died from the virus, to date.

Data from the province shows Morinville has 158 active COVID cases, compared to the 120 reported on Sunday. Altogether, 13 people from Morinville have died from COVID-19.

Overall, Alberta cases are at a record high. Data from the province shows the active COVID cases in Alberta have reached 62,733.

During the Jan. 13 update, Premier Jason Kenney said the number of active cases confirmed by lab-performed PCR is the highest number of cases identified in Alberta at any time during COVID.

“We know that these numbers only represent a fraction of the actual spread that's been happening in the province,” he said.
