Pair arrested for cocaine trafficking

Two people face charges of drug trafficking after St. Albert RCMP seized more than half a kilo of cocaine, enough cocaine for 500 to 1,000 street-level users.

Two people face charges of drug trafficking after St. Albert RCMP seized more than half a kilo of cocaine, enough cocaine for 500 to 1,000 street-level users.

Several other illegal drugs and a substance believed to be used in repackaging cocaine were also seized at an Edmonton home on May 21. The drugs were found during the pair’s arrest.

Officers had been called to the Sturgeon Community Hospital in St. Albert three weeks earlier to investigate the alleged assault of three people at a home on Grosvenor Boulevard. As a result, Scott McBride, 34, and Brandy Dmetruk, 30, of Edmonton were charged with aggravated assault.

When officers came to arrest them on May 21, they also found evidence of drugs and obtained a warrant to search the home. Cpl. Laurel Kading with the St. Albert RCMP said the quantity of drugs found is concerning.

“Any amount is a problem but when we are getting into those high numbers it’s making us feel that it affects the safety of the community,” she said.

Separate from their other charges, McBride and Dmetruk have now been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds obtained from crime. McBride was also charged with two counts of breaching a recognizance from previous charges. The pair will appear in St. Albert court on June 15.
