A 23-year-old man will spend the next eight months in jail after stabbing a man in the neck with a pocket knife last March.
Branden Lee Goodwin appeared in St. Albert Provincial Court Monday and pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon.
Court heard on March 29, Emergency Medical Services and RCMP were called to a residence on Garden Crescent because a man had been stabbed.
The victim and Goodwin were both attending a party at the residence and got into a fight. The victim told police he dodged a punch from Goodwin but they both ended up in a fistfight on the ground. Goodwin then pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed him in the neck.
The victim was holding a paper towel over his wound when EMS and police arrived. He was treated at the Sturgeon Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Goodwin fled the scene. RCMP picked him up the next day at his uncle’s apartment in St. Albert. They found him hiding behind a bedroom door.
At the time of the incident, Goodwin was under a two-month conditional sentence for an assault charge in Yarmouth, N.S. Goodwin is originally from Nova Scotia. He moved to St. Albert in December, 2012.
Goodwin has been in police custody since the end of March.
On Monday, Judge Norman Mackie handed Goodwin a one-year jail sentence. Given 1.5-to-1 credit for time in custody prior to sentencing, he has just under eight months left to serve.
Goodwin will also be under a one-year probation order following his release, a 10-year weapons prohibition, and he is to have no contact with the victim.
