RCMP are increasing both daytime and nighttime patrols in the Akinsdale area after a rash of tire slashings and other vandalism incidents last week.

Several vehicles had their tires slashed or had the air let out of their tires between Sept. 27 and Oct. 5, say police.

Students from Elmer Gish school reported that someone had let the air out of some of their tires and had slashed tires of vehicles parked along Akins Drive between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sept. 30. That same day, a resident living along Akins Drive reported that the front tire of her Jeep was slashed.

One Akinsdale Gardens resident reported that the tires on her car had been slashed in two separate incidences.

On Oct. 2, eight residents found that their tires had been slashed on their vehicles overnight on Akins Drive. One resident who reported a rock had been thrown through their kitchen window also found a tire slashed on their car during the same time period.

A car parked in a parkade at the back of Akins Drive also had a tire slashed sometime between Oct. 3 and Oct. 5.

“Either someone has an agenda for the Akinsdale area or it could perhaps be someone from the Akinsdale area,” says Cpl. Laurel Kading with St. Albert RCMP.

“Something is happening here and if it happens to be someone who is lashing out because there are some issues, let’s find out what they are and try and help this person.”

RCMP have since increased officer patrols in the area. They are asking the public in surrounding communities to also be vigilant – if you see suspicious activity, call the police.

“There is potential for more to happen and that’s why we’re asking for help from the community,” says Kading.

If you have any information about this or any crime, call the St. Albert RCMP at 780-458-7700, or if you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
