St. Albert voters head to the polls today to select one of two mayoral candidates and up to six of 13 candidates vying for council.

Because St. Albert doesn't have a ward system, voters can select up to six candidates but it's not required to select that many.

The polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at all nine voting stations across the city. A map showing the location of all voting stations can be found here.

The most popular voting times are during the late afternoon when many people get off work and in the evening before the polls close, said returning officer Chris Belke.

“There seems to always be people waiting to vote as soon as we open the doors,” Belke added.

“If you can come at an off-peak time, you're going to get your vote done in no time at all.”

Unofficial results will be available at www.stalbert.ca/election starting at about 8:30 p.m. Monday. All results are expected by 9 p.m.

To be eligible to vote, you must be at least 18, a Canadian citizen and have resided in Alberta for at least six consecutive months immediately prior to election day. Voters do not require photo identification.

Interest in the election is growing steadily every day, judging from increasing traffic on the city's election website, said communications director Mike Kluttig.

Daily page views were running at about 400 but hit 700 on Thursday, he said.

In the last month the site has attracted 5,800 views, of which 2,500 came in the last week, he said. The candidates page is the most popular page on the site, getting 1,900 views in the last month and 965 in the last week, he said.
