Elias Morgan Simon, the Morinville man accused of killing an Alexander First Nation man earlier this year, will face a preliminary inquiry in May.
Simon, 21, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 20-year-old Morgan Drew Arcand-Faithful, who died April 4 following a late-night street fight.
RCMP responded to a report of a fight in the area of 103 Street on the 9900 block shortly after 11 p.m. An RCMP news release stated that a man was found on scene with a “visible wound.”
Arcand-Faithful was pronounced dead at the scene, despite treatment by emergency responders.
The death was declared a homicide after a next-day autopsy, however, no cause of death has been released to date.
Police said they believe Arcand-Faithful and Simon knew each other and were likely together that night, but said they aren’t sure where the pair was prior to the street fight.
Simon is in custody at the Edmonton Remand Centre and appeared in a Morinville courtroom Thursday via closed-circuit television. His mother and father were also present in court.
No plea has been entered to date. A preliminary inquiry is set for May 22 and 23 in a St. Albert courtroom.
A preliminary inquiry is the first step in a serious criminal case and requires the Crown to present its evidence to the judge, who then determines if the evidence is sufficient to go to trial.
