It’s time to get dirty for a good cause in West Sturgeon. The people of Sturgeon County are set to take on a challenging obstacle course to raise vital funds for charity.
On Sept. 12, the West Country Hearth Assisted Living Facility is running the second annual West Country Hearth Attack.
“Our dementia unit needs the most support now,” said Colleen Soetaert, chairperson of the facility.
The West Country Hearth Attack is a race where participants navigate through six kilometres of varying and challenging terrain. Twenty man-made and natural obstacles dot the track to test the racers co-ordination and fitness.
This event is so special to the community, and to Soetaert, because it brings everyone together to support the senior population.
“It shows our young people care about our seniors,” Soetaert says. “It makes our community feel more complete.”
They are hoping to double the success of the event from last year and raise $90,000 with 500 racers.
The facility is a non-profit centre that is home to seniors from the West Sturgeon area. Prior to the construction of the home, the seniors had to relocate to other communities to receive adequate care.
The Harmony Haven dementia wing has 26 beds but the unit still needs more support. Soetaert said because dementia residents require the most services and assistance, they are in need of more funds.
Registration for the event includes a T-shirt, burger, drink, a swag bag and the race of your life. Early bird registration is $60 and ends on June 30.
Volunteer positions are available for those who don’t want to compete.
After the race, everyone is invited to the beer tent for a barbecue and celebration where prizes will be awarded.
