A St. Albert RCMP officer has been charged with assault.

Following an RCMP investigation that commenced last December, Const. Chris Wilcox was charged with assault on July 2.

The charge results from an on-duty incident that occurred on Nov.17, 2013 involving a civilian in custody at the St. Albert detachment.

Wilcox, a general duty officer, remains on active duty pending resolution of the charges.

“I wasn’t concerned that this particular incident would affect his ability to conduct his duties,” said Insp. Kevin Murray, detachment commander.

An internal RCMP Code of Conduct investigation has been ordered and will be completed upon resolution of the court process.

Wilcox will make his first appearance in St. Albert Provincial Court on September 15.

A Crown prosecutor from Calgary will handle the case.
