St. Albert RCMP officer Const. David Matthew Wynn has died in an Edmonton hospital, confirm police.

Wynn, 42, was one of two officers involved in a shooting at Apex Casino around 3 a.m. Saturday.

Wynn was shot in the head. He never regained consciousness.

RCMP has identified the shooter as Shawn Maxwell Rehn, 34, of the greater Edmonton area. He is known to police.

Wynn joined the RCMP in 2009. He worked as a school resource officer at Keenooshayo School for the past five years. Prior to that, he worked as a paramedic in Bridgewater, N.S.

"Today, the RCMP lost a dedicated member in the line of duty, his wife lost a husband, and his sons lost a father," said Deputy Commissioner Marianne Ryan in a statement. "Words cannot express the deep sadness we feel today."

Wynn is survived by his wife Shelly and three sons Matthew, Nathan and Alexander.

A regimental funeral will be held in the Edmonton area.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of RCMP Constable Wynn. We join you in mourning his passing as we struggle with the senselessness of his death," said Mayor Nolan Crouse on behalf of city council and St. Albertans.

Auxilary Const. Derek Bond, the other officer involved in Saturday's shooting, has since been released from hospital.

"We are grateful for his volunteer service to the RCMP and to our community. We sincerely wish him a full recovery," said Crouse.

A memorial book is available in the lobby of St. Albert Place for the public to express their condolences. The memorial book will be given to Const. Wynn’s family in honour of his memory.

The book is available from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and statutory holidays.

There are two public locations where residents have placed flowers at the base of flagpoles: St. Albert Place (City Hall) at 5 St. Anne Street and Maloney Place (RCMP Detachment offices) at 96 Bellerose Drive.

Flags at all St. Albert facilities are flying at half-mast.

A regimental funeral to honour Wynn's life is scheduled for Monday at Servus Place.
