Front entrance
Current state: Front entry is recessed inside the building with a sidewalk leading to the front doors. Interior features some lease space, such as Source for Sports, Dynamic Sports Physiotherapy and Starbucks.
Proposed change: Build front entryway out to the current sidewalk, stopping before the parking lot. Doing so would add 4,000 sq. ft of space on the main floor, which would create space for multi-purpose rooms as well as more retail spaces.
Kingsway Toyota leisure ice and indoor playground
Current state: The two recreation areas are separated by a wall with window. The leisure ice is open until the beginning of May, at which time large inflatables are set up inside for the summer. The indoor playground is popular with families with young children.
Proposed change: The two separate facilities would be combined into one large room — the wall between them would be knocked out and the leisure ice would be removed to create a larger children and youth area. Potential uses for the leisure ice's 6,000 sq. ft. of space include climbing or bouldering walls, synthetic ice and mini-stick courts or other attractions that could appeal to pre-teens, identified as underserved in the expansion report.
Outdoor playground
Current state: Does not exist. Located on the northeast side of the building, directly outside the Kingsway Toyota leisure ice, the area is currently an open field, which the city owns.
Proposed change: Create an outdoor playground for all seasons. Winter uses could include a skating pond to replace the indoor leisure ice, tobogganing hills and fire pits. Summer uses could include basketball hoops, BMX tracks or other outdoor recreation possibilities.
Expanded use: If needed for additional indoor space, the area could be enclosed and built out as an enclosed play space or other area.
Sarasota field house
Current use: the first field house, located between the Pizza 73 field house and the three-court gymnasium, the indoor pitch is used for soccer as well as other sports such as lacrosse and baseball.
Proposed change: Remove the boards surrounding the indoor field, which would allow the field to be used as either another gymnasium space or a turf field as a practice area for soccer, lacrosse, baseball and football.
Landrex water play centre
Current state: Features include separate pools of differing depths to suit all age groups, two water slides, a river ride, two hot tubs, a steam room and a sauna, as well as numerous spray and other water features.
Proposed change: Nothing immediate.
Expanded use: If needed, the hot tubs would be removed and the aquatic centre expanded to include a four-lane, 25-metre swimming pool, as well as additional water features, such as a wave rider.
Other proposed main floor changes: Build third ice sheet at facility's south end, add an event loading and storage space for Northstar Hyundai arena, swap locations of administration offices and child-minding areas.
Fitness and wellness centre
Current use: One of the busiest spots in the facility, averaging 100 users per hour at peak times, the fitness and wellness centre offers cardiovascular exercise space as well as free weights and weight machines. There is a dedicated fitness studio as well. There are two change rooms, each 600 sq. ft. in size.
Proposed change: Add more than approximately 10,000 sq. ft of space by expanding the area out over the new front entrance and over the former leisure ice area (4,000 sq. ft and 6,000 sq. ft. respectively). Add new studio spaces, change multi-purpose and meeting rooms into new locker rooms approximately 2,500 sq. ft. each.
Christensen Developments track and training centre
Current state: The 270-metre indoor track offers four, one-metre lanes for runners and walkers. The corners have been transformed into temporary studios for spinning classes, as well as stretching and weight space.
Proposed change: Servus Place is now adding washrooms to the track levels courtesy of a donation from the 55-Plus Games legacy. Add two more lanes to the track's inside. Build studio space for spin classes over the new front entrance, as well as storage space.
