Salvation Army calling for Coats for Kids… and Families

The Salvation Army is rallying public support in advance of an annual program that helps families – not just children – stay warm over the winter months.

“It’s also for families,” Pastor Peter Kim said of the 10th annual Coats for Kids and Families campaign. “Some of the adults actually need some coats as well. That’s where we’re finding the shortfall. Our program is not just for the children.”

The program runs from Tuesday, Oct. 14 to Friday, Oct. 24. The church helped more than 48 families last year and expects to help a slightly larger number this season.

Its goal is to accumulate as many coats and other cold weather garments as possible. In addition to coats, people can also donate snowpants, mitts, gloves, hats and scarves. New items are preferred but gently used second-hand ones are acceptable also.

“We’re trying to provide good quality winter wear. We actually have, over the years, purchased some coats. We’re finding that some of the kids are not wearing kid-sized coats. They’re a little bit bigger. We’re trying to get some of the older kids appropriate sized coats.”

He offered his thanks to the community, in particular the Rotary Club of St. Albert, Apex Casino, Page Cleaners, and Sturgeon Valley Baptist Church for their support of the program as well.

“No child or family member should lack any proper winter wear this season. It looks like it’s going to be a cold one.”

People can call the church at 780-458-1937 to learn more about the program or to make an appointment to be a recipient. If someone wants to make a referral of someone else for the program, they should also call first and the church will determine the need.

Coats and other garments can be dropped off at the church located at 165 Liberton Drive between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Cash donations are also accepted.

More information can be found at www.stalbertsalvationarmy.ca or on the church’s Facebook page.
