It looks like voters in this region will have a very full ballot to fill out, as school trustee elections will also go forward Oct. 21.
Unofficial nomination results were released by several school divisions after nominations closed at noon, Monday.
St. Albert Public Schools communications co-ordinator Paula Power noted the following candidates will be running for election to the public board’s five seats:
Kim Bugeaud is a St. Albert resident who spent one term as a public school board trustee from 1995 to 1998. She ran in a provincial election under the Liberal banner and is employed as a social worker.
Cheryl Dumont, incumbent, was first elected to the board of trustees in 2010. She is the current vice chair of the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) Zone 2/3 and the past chair of the ASBA Zone 2/3 advocacy committee.
Glenys Edwards, challenger, announced her intention to run earlier this summer in the Gazette.
Gerry Martins, incumbent, was elected trustee to the board in October 2004. Following his acclamation in the 2007 election, he was elected vice chair of the board for the 2007-2008 school year, and the following year, Gerry was elected chair for the 2008-2009 school year.
Merrin Nuc, incumbent, is a retired teacher who taught French, math and science, and also wrote courses for distance learning. In addition, she served on the Alberta Teachers’ Association executive committee.
Sheri Wright, challenger, also announced her candidacy earlier this summer in the Gazette.
Catholic board
The Greater St. Albert Catholic School District will have an election race in two of the three districts according to returning officer Deb Schlag.
In Ward 1, St. Albert, there are four positions open, and six candidates, including:
Dave Caron, incumbent, has served as a school trustee for Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools since 1992. Caron is a long-time commercial finance manager with a major chartered bank.
Joan Crockett, incumbent, is vice chair of the board and announced her candidacy earlier this summer in the Gazette.
Rosaleen McEvoy, incumbent, was first elected to the board in 2004. Originally from Ireland, McEvoy and her husband have lived in St. Albert since 1975.
Cathie Sarafinchan, challenger, has volunteered as a children’s festival co-ordinator in St. Albert.
Vince Schiller, challenger, is a St. Albert parent who works for an IT company in Edmonton.
Serena Shaw is a local parent of two daughters who attend Catholic board schools.
Ward 3 in Legal includes Cathy Proulx, incumbent, and Tom Turner competing for the lone seat.
The Morinville Ward 2, was acclaimed as the two seats went to Noreen Radford and Brendan Kaup.
Francophone
The Great North Centre Francophone School Board’s St. Albert/Legal division will have an election.
According to unofficial nominations provided by returning officer Gerard Bissonnette Monday, two candidates, Ronald St. John and Phillip Burrows, have stepped forward to contest this seat.
Sturgeon School Division
According to official nomination results emailed by returning officer Iva Paulik Tuesday, there will be only one contested seat in the Sturgeon School Division, and one empty seat to deal with.
Ward 7 is the only one that will see an election race for the Sturgeon school board. Candidates Terry Jewell and Daryl Krieger will contest that seat.
The Ward 3 seat, by contrast, is vacant. No one stepped forward for that area. The nomination for Ward 3 will remain open until someone steps forward.
