Seminar provides know-how for business owners

Getting started in business is tough … so tough that Dar Schwanbeck often compares it to entering The Hunger Games.

Getting started in business is tough … so tough that Dar Schwanbeck often compares it to entering The Hunger Games.

But unlike the story of the dystopian future North America in which residents participate in an annual death match, there is hope for entrepreneurs to succeed among competitors, said Schwanbeck, executive director of the Northern Alberta Business Incubator in St. Albert.

Schwanbeck and the incubator are holding a seminar in Morinville next week to provide the necessary know-how.

“It’s just a seminar to introduce people to the things that they should be thinking about when starting a business,” he said.

Topics will include customer relations, business goals and how to achieve them, managing human resources, marketing plans and finances.

Although there are hundreds of new businesses entering the market every year, many business owners don’t know how to run a business properly, he added.

He hopes that at least a few entrepreneurs will come out to the event, which is open to new business owners but also welcomes experienced entrepreneurs.

“It’s interesting how many people will literally invest hundreds and thousands of dollars in these startups and they have no experience in business at all,” Schwanbeck said. “You would not jump out of an airplane without skydiving lessons.”

The Start Up Games will take place on Thursday, May 29 at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre at 9502 – 100 Ave. The session will last from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and cost $30 per person.

The registration deadline is Tuesday, May 27 at 4:30 p.m.

To register call 780-939-7839 or visit ca.apm.activecommunities.com/morinville and search for Start-Up Games.
