There will be all of the usual ways to celebrate when Seniors’ Week comes around again next week.

You can enjoy a spate of activities like the classic pancake breakfast, the strawberry tea and the social lunch, all put on by the St. Albert Senior Citizens’ Club. Moments like these will always come and go but who can remember them from one year to the next?

Memory is the theme for a special event that the St. Albert Public Library is hosting during an open house at St. Albert Catholic High School. While the 20-minute video called Memories Shared ties into the larger community celebrations taking place all year round, it is intended to last for the ages.

“The goal of the project was to produce a legacy piece commemorating St. Albert’s 150th birthday that would involve seniors in the community,” explained Heather Dolman, the library’s public services manager. “What better way to do this than to let seniors tell their own stories to the younger generation?”

Library staff arranged for six city junior high school students to interview a prominent local senior on various relevant social topics like education, activism, war and cultural roots. The video that will be screened is more like a sampler of the larger end result, a film that is still being edited. In the end, that extended version video will be available at the library.

“We are so pleased with the results of this project,” exclaimed Kathleen Troppmann, teen services co-ordinator. “The video is great and the seniors and teens developed a real connection.

“We saw this project as a way to bring two groups together that sometimes don’t have opportunity for interaction, but have so much to offer each other when they do connect.”

Memories Shared: A St. Albert Perspective will be shown at 7 p.m. on Monday during an open house at St. Albert Catholic High School located at 33 Malmo Dr. All are welcome to attend. It will also screen at the seniors’ club on Tuesday during the strawberry tea at 1 p.m.
