Drivers should take extra precautions because of winter driving conditions, St. Albert RCMP advises.

The detachment received 139 reports of vehicle collisions in December.

Slick roads and dark driving conditions were in part to blame for a pedestrian struck by a car on Gervais Road earlier this week.

A 24-year-old woman was crossing at the intersection of Gervais Road and Goodridge Drive around 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 5, when she was hit by the passenger-side mirror of a blue 2008 Honda Civic car travelling on Goodridge Drive towards Hebert Road.

The 78-year-old driver of the car said he noticed the pedestrian walking and tried to swerve around her.

The pedestrian was taken by ambulance to the Sturgeon Hospital. It is believed that her injuries are not major or life threatening. The driver of the car was not injured.

There are too many hazards that come with extremely cold weather to justify the aggressive driving patterns that officers see everyday, says Cpl. Laurel Kading with St. Albert RCMP.

Hazards police themselves are not immune to.

Extremely icy highways conditions caused an RCMP cruiser to roll into a ditch Friday morning, when the officer lost control of his marked police car on Highway 44, just north of the intersection of Highway 37 around 8:50 a.m.

The officer was on his way to assist Morinville RCMP officers who were responding to another rollover collision on Highway 44.

The officer was transported to the Sturgeon Hospital for precautionary examination, but is believed to have minor injuries. The cruiser did not hit any other vehicles. The officer was the sole occupant of the car.

"Don't put yourself and your family through the traumatic experience of hitting or injuring someone. Let's slow down and be safe out there!" Kading said.
