A local social worker who already has school trustee experience wants to take another shot at the job.
Kim Bugeaud has announced as a candidate for the St. Albert Public Schools board of trustees election. The 25-year resident of St. Albert was a public school trustee from 1995 to 98, has run under the Liberal banner in a provincial election and is a social worker by profession.
“The reason I decided to run again is I am very passionate about education and preparing children for the future,” she said Wednesday. She said a solid education creates well-rounded students.
She said serving as trustee is a very worthy calling. “I also think it’s a place where you can work in the community, doing public service,” said Bugeaud. She said a public school board benefits from a diverse group of trustees.
“I think that locally governed schools are key to a civil society.”
Bugeaud said stewardship of the public division resources is more important now than ever, considering provincial budgets. She said it’s important trustees can have effective, positive relationships with the provincial government but also be courageous to make a stand when protecting things like class sizes, staffing levels and other vital areas.
Bugeaud said St. Albert has made a name for itself in the world of education. “We have a tradition we need to uphold,” she said. “We’ve been quite avant-garde here in St. Albert for quite some time.”
The public board candidate said she also feels strongly the community should feel part of the school division, and trustees should actively engage the community.
But most importantly, Bugeaud said it’s vital to remember the most important reason schools exist. “We have to ensure every student has an opportunity to be successful,” she added.
