A waterfall was an unexpected and unwanted feature at Servus Place over the weekend.
Bryce McLeod, acting facility manager, said a sprinkler head valve was released on the second floor of the facility on Saturday evening, and it opened up the floodgates at the Skybox Grill.
“There was a lot of water coming down the staircase and just outside. It made its way through a couple of ceiling tiles,” he said.
While the fire department responded to the scene as per protocol for every instance that a fire suppression system is activated, there was no threat to anyone in the building.
Evacuation was not necessary, McLeod continued.
“We had gone to the first stage. Everybody was held and it was business as usual in the majority of our areas. Just the west entrance was shut off until we got the ‘safe’ for people to reenter once the water was contained and cleaned up.”
Servus Place staff barricaded off the area to clean up the mess. Water service to the entire building was shut off at one point but was reopened soon after.
McLeod indicated that it was a minor episode that was handled quickly. The damages so far are minimal, according to their early inspection.
“That has been assessed at this time. There has been no major facility damage. All is good; everything is under control.”
The cause of the event is unknown at this time and it remains under investigation.
The Skybox Grill was forced to close and remained so until Tuesday morning.
