Residents will get a glimpse of what emergency services personnel in St. Albert do on a daily basis during an open house on Tuesday.

The St. Albert Fire and Emergency Services department will be holding an open house on May 21 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Fire Station 3 to celebrate local emergency medical services (EMS) workers during EMS week.

“The focus of EMS week is on the services we provide in the community and now, under the provincial model, we sometimes go beyond our boundaries,” said fire chief Ray Richards.

Since 2009, St. Albert has been operating under an integrated fire services and EMS model. The department provides two ambulances under contract to Alberta Health Services and has 41 paramedics, 43 emergency medical technicians and two emergency medical responders on staff.

Richards said the open house is also a good chance for residents to share emergency services related experiences with staff.

“It’s an opportunity for the community to come out and see the kinds of things we do, see the equipment and meet and greet the staff,” he added.

Residents can climb inside ambulances and see the types of lifesaving equipment available, they can talk to EMS personnel, or they can learn about the various ways St. Albert’s Fire and Emergency Services help to protect the community. Kids can also enjoy the inflatable bouncy castle.
