Two St. Albert Public students have turned out to have ordinary coughs and colds instead of the extraordinary COVID-19, says the board’s superintendent.

St. Albert Public families got a letter Friday updating them on the district’s plans to handle the novel coronavirus disease known as COVID-19, which was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11.

Leo Nickerson and Sir George Simpson families learned last week two students may have been exposed to the virus, but that those students had not been back to school since said exposure.

It has since been confirmed that those students do not have the virus and instead have a regular cough or cold, Sumners said. The students will head back to class as soon as they’ve recovered from it.

While there were no confirmed cases of the virus in St. Albert as of Thursday, Sumners said it is probably inevitable that a case would show up here at some point. The district has mobilized extra clean-up crews to disinfect rooms and might need to cancel extracurricular activities in the months ahead. Teachers are also reminding kids to wash their hands, cough into their sleeves and take other steps to reduce the spread of disease.
