A fire restriction has been implemented by Sturgeon County on Monday, covering the entire county as well as the towns of Bon Accord, Legal, and Redwater.

While fire restrictions still allow for backyard campfires and barbecues, all existing fire permits for things like burn barrels have been suspended until further notice, and no new permits will be issued until the order is rescinded.

“All outdoor fires presently burning, whether set under the authority of a fire permit or not, must be extinguished,” the county said in an April 22 release.

“Firework permits for low hazard/family fireworks issued are suspended [and] no new firework permits will be issued.”

The fire restriction also doesn't apply to off-highway vehicles (OHVs) or all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), but the county is asking those driving or working in grassy areas to “use extreme caution” as hot exhaust pipes or vehicle debris could start fires.

“Residents are encouraged to take action to prevent wildfires and prepare for wildfires. This includes making simple choices when maintaining your property, landscaping your yard, or undertaking a renovation or construction project.”

Strathcona County also implemented a fire restriction today, which applies to all rural county areas but not Sherwood Park.
