Sun is shining on the Rainmaker

Nothing says it’s summertime in St. Albert quite like the annual Rainmaker Rodeo, and if you believe the weatherman it will be a great weekend to get out and take it all in.

You might have missed yesterday’s opening-night concert, but the action goes all weekend with a little something for everyone.

The highlight for many is the annual parade, which starts this morning at 9:30. The route will take paraders from St. Vital Avenue and Mount Royal Drive toward its destination in front of Lions Park.

The midway itself, located on Riel Drive south of downtown, opens up at 10:30 a.m. today and tomorrow, so if you want to eat a corn dog and hop on the Ferris wheel you won’t have to wait long to get started.

Rodeo events, which include the usual bull riding, saddle bronc, bareback riding, steer wrestling, calf roping and barrel racing, will begin at 2 p.m. today and 1 p.m. tomorrow, and various extra attractions are scheduled throughout both days this weekend.

The Dynamo Dogs All-Star Showcase runs at 11:30, 2:30 and 5:00 today as well as 11, 1:30 and 3:30 tomorrow.

A petting zoo will be on site both days, opening at noon, and family-friendly entertainment options abound with shows starting roughly every two hours during Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Those looking to let loose in front of a stage can take in a no-minors country show tonight at 7 p.m. featuring The Road Hammers, Aaron Pritchett, Kira Isabella and Dirt Road Angels.

Site admission costs $5 for those aged 7 to 12, $15 for those aged 13 to 59, and is free for children under six and seniors 60 and older.

Parking near the site is limited, so take advantage of the park and ride offered from the west parking lot at St. Albert Centre to the site. Buses leave every 20 minutes.
