The St. Albert Taxpayers Association is looking for a new president.
The community group announced late Monday in a news release that Gord Hennigar had resigned as president on Saturday. Dan Dafoe will serve as president for the interim.
Hennigar was not available for comment before the Gazette’s press deadline Tuesday. Deane Doucette, a member of the association and listed as a contact on the news release, said he was limited in what he could say.
“I don’t have anything to say on that at the present. I’m sorry,” Doucette said. “I can’t give you any comment. Our board is going to be meeting today or tomorrow and I’ll ask my board to release some more information.”
But Doucette said Hennigar’s resignation was routine.
“There isn’t any great mystery. Gord left of his own volition. He wasn’t pushed,” Doucette said.
Hennigar took over as president in late 2011 when then-president Lynda Flannery chose not to run again. A candidate for alderman in the 1990s, Hennigar was also one of the founding members of the association.
Hennigar’s resignation came two days after he distributed a news release to businesses in St. Albert promoting his new Election Action Committee. He told the Gazette in a later interview that this new organization was not affiliated with the taxpayers association.
The committee has set up an office in Campbell Business Park that can be used by anyone running for council this fall who can prove they are fiscally responsible.
The group will also help pay some campaign costs for those candidates, Hennigar said. He also told the Gazette this group would be different than the taxpayers association.
“This group would be a little more radical and the board of (the St. Albert Taxpayers Association) doesn’t want to be perceived as radical,” Hennigar said Friday.
The St. Albert Taxpayers Association will have a membership meeting on April 22, states its news release.
