Mushroom mania

Sorrentino's Restaurant on St. Albert Trail is back with its 21st annual Mushroom Harvest.

The domed fungus is a culinary delight popular with some, revered by others.

In honour of the mushroom, the restaurant's top chefs have created a special menu that showcases it in soup, salads, pancakes, risotto, ravioli, pizza, meat entrees and fish.

Combining traditional Italian cuisine with the avant-garde, the new menu is available until the end of Sept. Visit sorrentinos.com for more information.

Cooking classes on tap

TV chefs make cooking look easy. But all too often harried parents run out of ideas for creating exciting, palette pleasing meals.

Metro Continuing Education, a division of Edmonton Public Schools, once again leads the charge offering a fall session of 35 cooking classes.

Conducted by Red Seal chefs and specialists in their field, the three or four hour classes provide inspiration, tips, tricks and new recipes.

Classes range from pie baking, learning chef's soup secrets, cider brewing, cheese making and learning the basics of safe fermenting.

This season the ethnic section highlights a taste of Peru, Austria, Ukraine, South Africa, East India, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam.

Specialty classes for making Halloween treats, Christmas cookies, edible holiday gifts and the perfect Yule log are also available. There's even a class on how to create the ultimate turkey dinner.

Classes run from Sept. to Dec. For more information visit metrocontinuiningeducation.ca

More workshops at Get Cooking

In 2011 Kathryn Joel founded Get Cooking by hosting home-based cooking classes. In the summer of 2014, Get Cooking moved to a commercial venue within the campus of Grant MacEwan University.

Today it offers short cooking courses as varied as making pasta, pressure-cooking and harvesting preserves to vegetarian, Moroccan and cooking with tea. There's even a class strictly for gents who can learn to whip up a meaty menu complete with sides.
