The City of St. Albert is temporarily waiving transit fees and deferring property taxes and utility bills.

On Monday during a special council meeting, council passed a bylaw to move the property tax due date from June 30 to Sept. 30.

The city has also temporarily eliminated transit ridership fares as of Tuesday, March 24, until May 31. The city said eliminating fares removes the need for handling transfers, tickets, cash and passes for passengers and operators to minimize contact and maintain social distancing measures.

The city has also deferred utility bills for residential and commercial accounts for the next three months. Residents will continue to be billed monthly for March, April and May, but will not be charged any penalties or transfer to taxes for non or partial payments. Residents are encouraged to pay what they can on their monthly bill.

Council also approved $400,000 extra for the city’s COVID-19 efforts, bringing the total funds dedicated to that to $1.4 million.

Administration will prioritize accelerating the process of pre-design and design for servicing the Range Road 260 (Rohit) lands, which is intended to be the site of a community amenities facility.

The current facility closures extended until May 31, including bookings, rentals, programs and services.

Next council meeting is April 6.
