Tremblay and Sharma win Legal council seats

Two local business owners became the newest members of Legal town council this week.

Two local business owners became the newest members of Legal town council this week.

Carol Tremblay and Ron Sharma were the winners of the 2012 Legal town council byelection Monday, earning 115 and 109 votes respectively, said returning officer Wilma Weiss.

The two candidates were the top vote-getters in a crowded field of eight vying for the council seats vacated by Albert St. Jean and Phil Hughes.

Sharma, who owns Legal Super Mart, squeaked into second just two votes ahead of third place candidate and Edmonton police constable Kurtis Hauptman.

Sharma said his new job carries a lot of responsibility and that he’ll have to do his best.

“I’m pretty excited,” he said.

His top priorities in office will be to get a pharmacy, a doctor and more businesses into Legal, as well as a full-time day care. He also welcomed any suggestions from the other candidates.

“We have to work together to get this town growing,” he said.

Tremblay, the other winner, couldn’t be reached for comment by press deadline.

About 288 people voted in the byelection. Based on the 2011 federal census, this represents a 33 per cent voter turnout, Weiss said.

Legal town council next meets on Dec. 10.
